How the Ottoman Founder (Osman I) Met His End Before Bursa’s Fall

Osman Ghazi, the revered founder of the Ottoman Beylik, which would grow into the mighty Ottoman Empire, was a figure of immense strength and strategic brilliance. His life was dedicated to expanding his small Anatolian territory, laying the groundwork for an empire that would last for centuries. But like all mortals, his reign came to an end. Understanding how Osman died provides insight into the early state of the Ottomans and the transition of power.

The Weight of Years and Illness

Unlike many warriors of his era who fell in battle, historical accounts suggest that Osman Ghazi’s death was due to natural causes, primarily old age and a debilitating illness. While the exact nature of his ailment isn’t definitively recorded with modern medical precision, chroniclers often point to gout as the likely culprit. This painful condition would have increasingly hampered his ability to lead campaigns in his later years.

Sources indicate that Osman had been suffering for some time before his passing. His health had deteriorated to the point where active leadership on the battlefield was no longer possible, leading him to entrust military campaigns to his son, Orhan Ghazi, and other loyal commanders.

    The Lingering Siege of Bursa

A crucial event intertwined with Osman’s final years and death is the long siege of Bursa. This strategic Byzantine city was a major target for Osman, who recognized its importance for the future of his burgeoning state. He famously expressed a desire to be buried in Bursa “under its silver dome,” referring to one of its prominent churches (later a mosque).

However, Osman Ghazi did not live to see the final capture of the city he so coveted. The siege was a protracted affair, lasting several years. It was his son, Orhan, who successfully negotiated the surrender of Bursa.

The Timing of His Death: A Matter of Historical Debate

The exact year of Osman’s death is a subject of some historical discussion, generally placed between 1323 and 1326 CE.

    • Some historians argue he died shortly before the fall of Bursa in 1326, having heard of its imminent capture or even its surrender from his deathbed.
    • Others suggest he passed away earlier, around 1323 or 1324, and that Orhan was already the acting, if not official, leader during Bursa’s final conquest.

What is generally accepted is that the news of Bursa’s fall reached him or coincided closely with his final moments, allowing him a sense of fulfillment of his long-held ambition.

    Legacy and Succession

Upon Osman’s death, the leadership of the Beylik passed smoothly to his son, Orhan Ghazi. Orhan proved to be a capable successor, building upon the foundations laid by his father. He made Bursa the new Ottoman capital, honoring Osman’s wish by interring him there. Osman’s tomb in Bursa remains a significant historical site.

The death of Osman Ghazi marked the end of an era – that of the founder. Yet, it also signaled the continuation and consolidation of the state he had fought so hard to establish, a testament to the strong groundwork he had laid.
