In an emotional and powerful ceremony, Osman Bey officially relinquishes the Beylik, declaring his son, Orhan Bey, as the new leader. He entrusts him with the seal of Ertuğrul Gazi, symbolizing the continuity of their noble mission to establish a just state for all Turks and Muslims. This act establishes Orhan not just as a successor, but as the one chosen to evolve the sapling into a great Ulu Çınar (Great Plane Tree).
Orhan Bey’s Conditions for Leadership
Upon receiving this immense responsibility, Orhan Bey does not accept it without laying down his own terms. Displaying the strong character and foresight of a true statesman, he demands that all Beys present swear allegiance to him and reject any form of division or two-facedness (ikilik). This ensures that his leadership starts with the complete and unified backing of the Kayı Beys, reinforcing the tribe’s strength against external threats. The momentous occasion is sealed with the Kılıç Kuşanma (Sword Ceremony) in Söğüt, where Orhan is formally armed with the symbols of the Beylik, taking an oath to protect the unity of the Oğuz and commit to continuous conquest.

The triumph is a massive morale boost and a clear sign of Orhan Bey’s martial prowess. Following this victory, the new Bey makes a critical strategic move by relocating the main Oba closer to the Bursa border. This serves a dual purpose: it intensifies the ongoing siege of the heavily fortified city and ensures better protection for the migrating Turkmen tribes joining the Beylik, reinforcing the Kayı’s regional dominance.
The Iznik Plan: Diplomacy and Gold
With the siege of Bursa ongoing, Orhan Bey turns his attention to the neighboring Byzantine power of Iznik, which is supporting Bursa. Demonstrating his sharp strategic mind, Orhan implements a complex plan. He sends his envoy, Cerkutay, to the Iznik Tekfur with a warning disguised as a diplomatic visit, demanding that Iznik ceases all aid to Bursa. Simultaneously, his brave Alpas successfully intercept and seize a large shipment of gold being sent from Iznik for tax purposes. This daring act weakens the Byzantine economy while providing the Kayı with resources, further demonstrating the new Bey’s ability to combine diplomacy, intimidation, and military action effectively.

This revelation strengthens the familial bond and symbolizes the continuation of the Kayı line, bringing immense happiness and the promise of a robust future for the state.
The Threat to Osman Bey and the Bravery of Fatma Hatun
The episode also features an alarming and dangerous moment during the succession ceremony. An assassination attempt is launched against Osman Bey. In a moment of sheer courage, his daughter Fatma Hatun selflessly shields her father from the danger and is wounded in the process.
